Our mission

"The mission of the Joint Research Centre's Directorate for Energy, Transport and Climate is to provide support to Community policies and technology innovation related to: energy – to ensure sustainable, safe, secure and efficient energy production, distribution and use; transport – to foster sustainable and efficient mobility in Europe; climate – to provide scientific and technical analyses in support to integrated air quality, climate and related policies."


The Directorate for Energy, Transport and Climate (Dir ETC) is one of the 7 scientific Institutes of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. The Dir ETC is based both in Petten, the Netherlands, and Ispra, Italy, and has a multidisciplinary team of around 300 academic, technical, and support staff. The research areas listed below involve partners from member states and beyond.

Typical Activities of the Institute include: 

  • Sustainable transport,
  • Renewable energies including solar, photovoltaics and biomass, 
  • Sustainable & safe nuclear energy for current & future reactor systems ,
  • Energy techno/economic assessment ,
  • Bioenergy including biofuels, 
  • Hydrogen and fuel cells,
  • Clean fossil fuel,
  • Energy efficiency in: buildings, industry, transport and end-use,
  • Security of energy supply
