JRC report on publicly funded research, development and demonstration projects on electric and plug-in vehicles in Europe

Electro-mobility is part of the alternative fuels mix promoted in the "Clean Power for Transport" legislative package launched by the Commission on 25 January 2013. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has gathered information on more than 320 research, development and demonstration (R,D&D) projects on electric cars, with a total budget of €1.9 billion (65% from public funding) to assess the potential gaps in the European R,D&D landscape. While this confirms that many R,D&D activities in this field are currently performed in Europe, the JRC report states that an increased exchange of information and more coordination between projects would result in a better leverage of the investments. According to a press release of the European Commission published on 15th of July 2013, this report will be a significant input for the European Electromobility Observatory launched by the European Commission early this year.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Radar tool

The JRC has developed an interactive communication tool that allows the user to have a general idea on what electric cars are, including their main challenges (such as costs or limited range) and benefits. It gives an overview of the electric car components that are currently the subject of R&D. The user can browse through EU- and Member States co-funded R&D projects for more information (budget, partners, description and links). The tool also provides an overview of the quantity and location of the EU and Member State co-funded demonstration projects with the possibility to have more detailed information on each project. The final version of the EV Radar tool will be launched at the 27th international electric vehicle symposium that will take place in Barcelona in November.
