IET signs cooperation agreement with Portuguese EDP Distribuição on Smart Grids

Signing the letter of intent between the JRC-IET and EDP Distribuição

In September 2012, the JRC-IET signed a letter of intent with the leading Portuguese electricity utility EDP Distribuição, to strengthen cooperation on Smart Grid related topics. The goal is to integrate data and insights from EDP Smart Grid installations into JRC scientific studies on Smart Grids

The cooperation agreement was signed by Mr. Giovanni De Santi, director of JRC-IET, and Mr. Joao Torres, CEO of EDP Distribuição, during a visit of a JRC delegation to the EDP headquarters in Lisbon and to the EDP-led Inovgrid project in Evora.

The cooperation agreement is part of a wider JRC-IET strategy to team up with selected European research and business stakeholders conducting activities in synergetic energy fields, particularly on Smart Grids.

JRC-IET and EDP Distribuição have already carried out joint activities. In 2011, EDP Inovgrid project has been selected as a case study to test the JRC-IET assessment framework of costs and benefits of Smart Grid and smart metering projects. The resulting JRC-IET cost-benefit methodology served as technical basis to the EC recommendations to Member States on Smart Metering deployment adopted in March 2012.
